Parks and Piers
The Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission operates two outstanding facilities on Folly Beach. First is Folly Beach County Park, featuring one of the Charleston area’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. Located on the west end of Folly Island, the park’s amenities include 2,500 feet of ocean frontage, 200 feet of river frontage, dressing areas, outdoor showers, restrooms, boardwalks, picnic areas, and a seasonal snack bar. Boogie boards bicycle, and beach chair and umbrella rentals are available between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season.
The other facility operated by the CCPRC is the Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier. The longest in the Southeast, this pier is 25 feet wide and extends more than 1,045 feet into the Atlantic Ocean to a 7,500 square foot diamond-shaped platform that is 23 feet above sea level. The pier is not only ideal for fishing, but is perfect for walking, birding and enjoying the ocean views. Amenities at the fishing pier also include a 1,400 square foot covered shelter, rod rentals, restrooms, the Gangplank Gift & Tackle Shop, and Locklear’s Beach City Grille.
The Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier plays host to a number of community events. Of special note is the annual Charleston Trident Fishing Tournament, which runs March 1 – October 31. The tournament recognizes outstanding saltwater and freshwater catches made throughout the Charleston SC area. Each month from May through October, people strap on their dancing shoes for the pier’s Moonlight Mixers. Folks from throughout the Lowcountry are invited to dance the night away under the stars.
Boats, Bikes and Surfing
The CCPRC also maintains the Folly River Landing, a boat ramp used by Folly Beach's many boating enthusiasts. For those who don’t own a boat, charters are available. In addition to fishing excursions, the day-adventurer can enjoy sightseeing tours, including eco-tours, sunset tours and shelling tours. Kayaks and jet skis are also available for rent on Folly Beach. Bicycling and surfing are also popular pastimes for locals and owners of both Folly Beach real estate and Charleston SC real estate. In fact, sightseeing by bike is one of the best ways to experience Folly Beach in its entirety. And yes, bikes are allowed on Folly Beach's six miles of beach. Speaking of the beach, Folly Beach is one of the top spots for surfing on the entire East Coast!
